The word "˜Sukhothai' means the rising of happiness. This city had been the capital of Thailand for about 120 years. Sukhothai city was part of Khmer Kingdom in 1238, when Pho Khun Pa Muang and Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao declared their sovereignty and settled a kingdom for Thai people. Pho Kun Bang Klang Hao became the first king of Sukhothai and called himself as Pho Khun Si Indrathit. After he died, the government was taken over by his son, Pho Kun Ban Muang and followed by his brother Pho Kun Ramkhamhaeng in 1278. Under the power of Ramkhamhaeng King, Sukhothai reached its triumphant, Thai alphabet was made, also the political and religion foundation in Sukhothai were also settled.
Things to see
Visit Sukhothai Historical Park to be able to see unique and historical building. Another place you need to come to is Wat Si Chum where you can find a big Buddha statue. Wat Si Chum itself is still a part of Sukhothai Historical Park. Wat Si Chum was built in the middle of the 14th century. You will be able to see the oldest temple in Thailand, Wat Mahathat.

For shopping, you can visit Phitsanulok Night Bazaar. This place is located 52 km away on the southeastern of Sukhothai. You can also come to Phun Hin Rong Kla National Park which is 71 km away on the eastern of Sukhothai. You can just walk around Nao National Park and Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, or even do rafting in this location.

Don't forget to enjoy Thai Ice Tea when you're in Sukhothai. For typical foods, you can try Gai Hor Baytoi (steamed chicken with pandanus leaves), Pia Takrai (pinned fried fish with lemongrass), Tom Yum Thalay (tom yum soup with seafood), Pla Sam Road (dori fish with 3 kinds of sauce), Yam Mamuang (mango salad) and Tord Man Goong (shrimp cake typically from Sukhothai).
